Visiting Researcher Programme

The programme is intended for scientists holding a PhD in economics, finance or econometrics or PhD candidates in these fields who are fluent in written and spoken English. Proficiency in Lithuanian is not required.

The selected visiting researchers, either individually or together with Bank of Lithuania employees, conduct economic research agreed on ahead of time. The research results are presented in seminars as well as featured in Bank of Lithuania publications and peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Who coordinates the Visiting Researcher Programme?

The programme is coordinated by the Applied Macroeconomic Research Division of the Economics Department, which:

  • conducts applied research in the fields of macro-economics, money, labour, international economics;
  • seeks to strengthen the analytical and strategic functions of the Economics Department, namely to carry out and publish high-quality economic research, as well as assist the Bank of Lithuania in making decisions on issues related to monetary policy and economic policy in general;
  • is responsible for the creation and improvement of macroeconomic models applied to projections, analysis of scenarios and policy assessment.

Research priorities

Proposals in all areas of economics relevant for central banks will be considered, but priority will be given to research projects on topics most aligned with the current and medium-term research priorities of Applied Macroeconomic Research Division. These include but are not limited to:

• The role of labour market institutions (min wage, unemployment benefits, active labour market policies, etc.), real labour market developments and market forces - Lithuanian perspective;
• Households' wealth and finances: dynamics and redistributions, heterogeneity of firms and households;
• Wage and profit developments, their persistence and their implications for price pressures; Competitiveness developments in the euro area and Lithuania;
• Monetary policy transmission channels (for Lithuania);
• Economics of ageing.

Applications must be submitted in English.

Application deadline:

  • 30th of April, 2024 for the visiting period April-August, 2024;
  • 30th of June, 2024 for the visiting period September-December, 2024 or beyond.

Who can participate in the Visiting Researcher Programme?

Applicants should hold a PhD or be PhD candidates in the fields of economics, finance or econometrics. They must be fluent in spoken and written English. Proficiency in Lithuanian is not required.

In selecting researchers, priority will be given to those having relevant research experience.


Employment conditions

  • The selected visiting researchers, either individually or together with Bank of Lithuania employees, conduct economic research agreed on ahead of time. The research results are presented in seminars as well as featured in Bank of Lithuania publications and peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Visiting researchers will be provided with a work space, access to the Bank of Lithuania library, data resources and computing facilities.
  • Remuneration is in line with the Bank of Lithuania’s remuneration system.
  • The duration of the project is flexible and determined by the amount of time needed for its completion (typically ranging from 3 to 6 months).
