CEFER Challenge

Inspired by the Federal Reserve Challenge in the U.S., the CEFER Challenge is an annual thematic team competition open to university students from various academic disciplines.

Three students from the University of Edinburgh won the inaugural CEFER Challenge, a virtual event designed to encourage students to think critically about macroeconomic issues in the euro area and the impact of climate change on monetary policy. A total of 25 students from various EEA countries and the UK participated. Six finalist teams faced a 15-minute Q&A session following their video presentations. Second place was awarded to students from the University of Orleans, France, and an honorable mention went to a mixed team that included a student from ISM, Lithuania.

Jeronimas Stroinovskis Lecture Series

The Jeronimas Stroinovskis Lecture Series was established by the Bank of Lithuania in memory of Jeronimas Stroinovskis, who served as the rector of Vilnius University from 1799 to 1806. The Stroinovskis Lectures have two primary objectives: to present and elucidate advancements in economics research to a wide audience, and to educate and inspire students to study economics in all its facets.

During the inaugural event, Andrei Zlate of the Federal Reserve Board delivered a lecture titled "Macroeconomic Implications of Offshoring, Labor Migration, Remittances, and Training." In his lecture, Mr. Zlate examined key trends in offshoring and migration data, making a compelling case for the role of economic models in explaining these data and offering policy insights. Through the use of carefully calibrated models, economists can elucidate the mechanisms underlying the procyclical nature of labor migration and the co-movement of output between countries engaged in offshoring.

PHD THESIS AWARD

In February 2023, the Board of the Bank of Lithuania awarded a prize of €5,000 to Jonas Striaukas for his thesis, "Estimation and Inference for High Dimensional Mixed Frequency Data Models." Jonas Striaukas defended his dissertation at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium.

Dr. Striaukas argues that nowcasting gross domestic product (GDP) growth is an especially relevant application area for central banks.

"In my dissertation, I demonstrate that the methods I propose yield more accurate forecasts compared to those currently used by central banks. Therefore, they serve as a more precise tool for central banks to monitor economic activity in real-time," said Jonas Striaukas.
