The Money Museum of the Bank of Lithuania welcomes spring by opening its door still wider
In two months of this year alone, more than 2 thousand visitors got acquainted with a rich and interactive exposition of the Money Museum of the Bank of Lithuania. In order to even more widely open the door for its visitors, the Money Museum prolonged its working hours. Starting from today, the Museum will be open for two hours longer and visitors will be accepted gladly on Saturdays as well.
“It is said that time is money. There is enough money in this Museum and as from today we also offer more time,” - said Vitas Vasiliauskas, Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania.
The modern exposition of the Money Museum of the Bank of Lithuania covers the area of more than 300 square meters in five halls of the Museum, currently exhibiting over four thousand exhibits which introduce the visitor to the history and development of the Lithuanian money and money world-wide and to the history of banking.
Technological solutions implemented in the Museum exposition make no problems for different age and height and disabled visitors in viewing the exposition.
“When creating the Museum, we tried to consider the needs of all visitors, therefore it is an interactive museum adapted not only for passive viewing of the exposition, but also for an observer’s active participation in the cognitive process: striking a souvenir plate on one’s own, weighing yourself on special scales or finding out your price in case you were of gold, platinum or silver”, spoke Vidmantas Laurinavičius, Head of the Money Museum of the Bank of Lithuania.
In the Museum, visitors may get acquainted with the development of money and monetary relations from ancient times, with the environment of the 15th -16th century mint and the development of the coin minting technology until the present time. The rich numismatic and bonistics collection introduces to the money of the world, displays the variety of coins and banknotes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Republic of Lithuania and other lands, which circulated on the territory of our country.
Exhibits in showcases introduce the visitor to the production of modern Lithuanian money. Here you can see samples of banknotes that were not issued into circulation, treasures found in Lithuania and other unique exhibits.
New working hours of the Money Museum of the Bank of Lithuania are as follows: 1 November–31 March from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays–Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays; 1 April–31 October from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays–Fridays and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays.
The Money Museum of the Bank of Lithuania was opened to the public in 1999 and an updated exposition was presented to the public at the end of 2010. The Museum funds amount to over 43 thousand of exhibits, reflecting the development of banking and monetary relations in Lithuania and the world.
