Lithuanian and Polish central banks to issue coins to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Commission of National Education
To mark the 250th anniversary of the Commission of National Education, on 12 October 2023, the central banks of Lithuania and Poland will issue collector coins commemorating it.
This is the second joint issue of the two central banks. In April 2021, the banks issued coins dedicated to the 230th anniversary of the Constitution of 1791.
The coins of the Lithuanian and Polish central banks to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Commission of National Education will share common iconographic elements and the same date of issue. The Bank of Lithuania will issue a €10 silver collector coin, and the Central Bank of Poland will issue a 10 złoty silver coin. The mintage and designs of the coins will be announced later on.
The Commission of National Education of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was established on 14 October 1773. It is recognised as the first ministry of education in Europe.
In addition to this coin, this year the Bank of Lithuania will issue a €2 commemorative coin “Together with Ukraine”. Most of the proceeds from the coin will be used in aid to Ukraine. In 2023, the central bank will also issue a €10 silver collector coin dedicated to the 700th anniversary of the founding of Vilnius. A €5 silver collector coin dedicated to the Boys’ and Youth Choir Ąžuoliukas on the occasion of the 100th birth anniversary of its founder Herman Perelstein will be issued as well. A €5 silver collector coin will commemorate the role of the Lithuanian Catholic Church in unarmed resistance. On 25 January, the central bank will also issue its annual numismatic set of euro circulation coins. Pre-orders will be available from 18 January 8:00 via the Bank of Lithuania’s e-shop. The set is dedicated to Klaipėda, which celebrates the 100 years of the joining to Lithuania.
