At the end of October 2002 broad money M2 made up LTL 14.2 billion. In the course of one month it increased by LTL 238.8 million, i.e. 1.7 per cent, the annual increase amounting to LTL 2.4 billion, i.e. 20.3 per cent.
Currency in circulation expanded by LTL 107.4 million in October. Demand deposits in litas increased by LTL 154.5 million, accounted mostly by the deposits of local government institutions and natural persons, at LTL 67.9 million and LTL 70.6 million, respectively.
Time and savings deposits in litas increased by LTL 13.4 million, of which deposits of non-financial public institutions contracted by LTL 40.9 million, and such deposits of natural persons increased by LTL 51.9 million. Deposits in foreign currencies went down by LTL 36.5 million, largely accounted by the decline of such deposits of natural persons of LTL 39.7 million.
Net foreign assets went down by LTL 54.1 million, of which foreign assets and foreign liabilities went up by LTL 74.1 million and LTL 128.2 million, respectively.
Domestic credit increased by LTL 327.2 million, of which net claims on the central government and mandatory social and health insurance funds went up by LTL 112.6 million, while claims on the private sector and non-banking financial institutions rose by LTL 164.2 million and LTL 35.2 million, respectively. The growth of claims on the private sector was determined by the increase of loans to private companies and natural persons by LTL 107.7 million and LTL 67.6 million, respectively.
