At the end of August 2005 broad money M2 made up LTL 25.6 billion. Over one month it increased by LTL 399.9 million, i.e. 1.6 per cent.
Money M1 grew in one month by LTL 187.4 million (1.3%) to LTL 14.1 billion at the end of August. With respect to M1 components, currency in circulation grew by LTL 6.8 million, while demand deposits in litas increased by LTL 180.5 million. Demand deposits of natural persons in litas decreased by LTL 91.1 million, and demand deposits of non-financial undertakings and other institutions grew by LTL 224.5 million and LTL 47.1 million, respectively.
Quasi-money grew by LTL 212.5 million (1.9%) in August to LTL 11.5 billion at the end of the month. Litas time and savings deposits increased by LTL 158.8 million in one month, of which time and savings deposits of natural persons increased by LTL 74.6 million, and such deposits of non-financial undertakings by LTL 89.9 million. Deposits in foreign currencies went up by LTL 53.8 million, of which deposits of natural persons increased by LTL 4.1 million and deposits of non-financial undertakings by LTL 53.4 million.
The main M2 counterparts - net foreign assets and domestic credit ? developed in opposite directions. Net foreign assets decreased by LTL 333.7 million (4.5%), and domestic credit grew by LTL 744.6 million (3.3%). Net claims on the central government and compulsory social and health insurance funds declined in August by LTL 131.9 million, while claims on non-financial public undertakings and non-banking financial institutions rose by LTL 12.9 million and LTL 6.8 million, respectively. Claims on the private sector increased by LTL 846.5 million. Among the latter, the highest increase in August was recorded in respect of the claims on private non-financial undertakings and natural persons, which went up by LTL 446.5 million and LTL 398.3 million respectively.
