To stimulate the development of economic ideas and promote financial literacy, the Bank of Lithuania is organising this year a university student competition entitled “New Economic Ideas”.
“We are for fresh and bold ideas. So, we expect from our country students a new and original view on key financial and economic issues. We believe that young researchers and their ideas will help to draw attention to national economic and financial problems and possible new solutions,” Governor of the Bank of Lithuania Vitas Vasiliauskas said.
According to the competition rules approved by the Board of the Bank of Lithuania, to be considered for the competition students, both Lithuanian and foreign nationals, must be enrolled in full-time Bachelor and Master degree programs at our country’s high schools. Also, citizens of the Republic of Lithuania, who are full-time students of Bachelor and Master degree programs at high schools in other countries are welcomed too.
The competition rules feature as many as 22 topics. Students are recommended to demonstrate a wider and deeper look into the formation of monetary and financial stability policy, economic integration processes, economic situation monitoring, quantitative assessment of economic laws, and other relevant issues.
Research papers by students submitted for the competition will be reviewed by the jury formed of the Bank of Lithuania’s experts. Cash prizes will be awarded to the authors of three best works. The winning paper will be awarded LTL 2500, the first runner-up LTL 1500, and the second runner-up LTL 1000.
Research papers for the competition “New Economic Ideas” must be submitted by 30 April. The competition rules are available at the Bank of Lithuania’s website.
To promote research on banking, finances, monetary issues and macroeconomics, the Vladas Jurgutis Award was established. Jurgutis was an academic, professor and the first Governor of the Bank of Lithuania in the pre-war period in the Lithuanian banking. It is awarded by the Bank of Lithuania together with the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences.
Furthermore, the Bank of Lithuania awards the Valdas Jurgutis scholarship for one academic year to two full-time students of economics and finance at universities of the Republic of Lithuania.
