Cash handlers check whether banknotes and coins are fit for circulation or if they are counterfeit. For this they need suitable equipment. National central banks regularly test the banknote devices by checking banknotes whose counterfeit copies are most often in circulation. The European Central Bank publishes a table of successfully tested devices and machines so that cash handlers and retail trade representatives could choose a banknote authentication device best suited for their needs. Cash handlers are required to handle cash only with the devices and machines that are included in the list of successfully tested devices and machines. | ![]() |
