Winners of Scientific Paper Competition “New Economic Ideas” Awarded on Vladas Jurgutis’ Birthday
Three winners of the student scientific paper competition “New Economic Ideas” were given monetary awards by the Bank of Lithuania. 13 scientific papers were presented to this competition this year, which was organised for the third time.
“Symbolically, these awards are handed out on November 5th — the birthday of Vladas Jurgutis, “father of the litas”, the first governor of the Bank of Lithuania and author of the first handbooks on economy. We hope that the example of V. Jurgutis will inspire the students who took part in the competition for seeking scientific objectives in the future”, stated professor Raimondas Kuodis, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania, at the student awards ceremony, which took place in the Euro Exhibition area at the museum Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania.
The paper evaluation commission, set up from employees of the Bank of Lithuania, granted first place to Oleg Davidovich, a fourth-year student of the Faculty of Economics at Vilnius University, for his paper “Ryšio tarp agreguotų vartotojų išlaidų ir pajamų modeliavimas” (Modelling of the relationship between consumers’ aggregated expenses and income). Second place went to Aušra Kasperavičiūtė, a postgraduate of the University of Management and Economics, for the paper “The Estimation of Monetary Policy Interest Rate Channelin Lithuania” (Pinigų politikos palūkanų normos poveikio kanalo vertinimas Lietuvoje), while the third one — to Martynas Brazauskas, a postgraduate of Šiauliai University, for the paper “Daugiakriterinių sprendimų priėmimo metodo taikymas formuojant vertės investicinį portfelį” (Application of the multi-criteria decision-taking method in the formation of a value investment portfolio).
The other competition participants considered the role of expectations in the price formation mechanism, development of Lithuanian household saving, financial stability of credit unions, monetary policy, etc.

The Bank of Lithuania is arranging the higher-education student scientific paper competition “New Economic Ideas” with a view to increasing the development of economic ideas and promoting financial awareness.
To promote banking, financial, monetary and macro-economic research, the Bank of Lithuania has established the Vladas Jurgutis Award, thereby noting the merits of the academician, professor, the first governor of the Bank of Lithuania, Vladas Jurgutis, to banking in Lithuania. The award is granted jointly with the Academy of Sciences.
In addition, the Bank of Lithuania grants annual Vladas Jurgutis scholarships to two full-time students of banking and finance with the best academic performance at Lithuanian universities.
