On 23 December 2005, the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania approved the proposal of President Valdas Adamkus to appoint Reinoldijus Sarkinas as a Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania for a third term.

The Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania is appointed for a term of five years by the Seimas upon the nomination by the President. The new term of Reinoldijus Sarkinas will begin on 15 February 2006.

When nominating Reinoldijus Sarkinas, the President of the Republic of Lithuania emphasized his successful work as a governor of the Bank of Lithuania. The decision of the President was also influenced by the aim to ensure the continuity of works related to the adoption of the euro in 2007.

“The Bank of Lithuania has already done a lot when preparing for an important event, i.e. adoption of the euro. However, there is still much to do in this field. I hope that together with staff members of the bank and other institutions we will be able to finish them successfully and the euro will be adopted smoothly and in time”, said Reinoldijus Sarkinas after being appointed by the Seimas as a Chairman of the Bank of Lithuania for a new term.

Having a university degree in economics and being highly experienced in finances, Reinoldijus Sarkinas is a Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania since 1996.

Reinoldijus Sarkinas was a member of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania from 1992 to 1995, and a Minister of Finance from 1995 to 1996.
