The Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania, Vitas Vasiliauskas, discussed with Mr. Olli Rehn, the Vice-President of the European Commission (EC) responsible for economic and monetary affairs, who is on a visit to Lithuania, the prospects for Lithuania to achieve an ambitious goal — to introduce the euro in 2015.

After introducing the Vice-President of the EC to the preparatory works on the introduction of the euro, the head of the Bank of Lithuania noted that the economic prospects for complying with the inflation criterion have improved, while public finances discipline is becoming the major challenge.   

“The stage of intensive preparation for the introduction of the euro commences, thus it is necessary to consolidate efforts for constructive work with the aim of introducing the euro in a timely manner,“ says Vitas Vasiliauskas.

During the meeting, Olli Rehn noted country’s achievements in overcoming the crisis and called for maintaining prudent policy stance with the aim to ensure sustainable convergence.
