The Bank of Lithuania ordered the printing of new 10 litas and 50 litas banknotes
On 15 June, the Bank of Lithuania and the German company Giesecke & Devrient GmbH signed the contract for the printing of new 10 litas denomination banknotes of the 2007 issue and an additional quantity of 50 litas denomination banknotes of the 2003 issue.
“Litas banknotes that are in circulation wear, therefore, those that are unsuitable for circulation are replaced with new banknotes, and their reserves have to be supplemented every several years. The design of 10 litas banknotes will not change, but the banknotes of new issue will have an additional security feature. The design and security level of 50 litas denomination banknotes will not change”, commented Mr. Reinoldijus Sarkinas, Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania, after signing the contract for the printing of litas banknotes.
According to the Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania, the German company will print a part of the new 10 litas banknotes this year, while the remaining part will be printed next year.
After the issue into circulation of the new 10 litas banknotes of 2007 issue, 10 litas banknotes of the issues of 1997 and 2001 will remain legal tender.
In the fourth quarter this year, the issue of 100 litas denomination banknotes of higher security level is planned. The Bank has already concluded the contract for the printing of these banknotes with the French banknote printing company François-Charles Oberthur.
