In seeking to assist distribution businesses in avoiding counterfeits during adoption of the European Union single currency in our country, the Bank of Lithuania is prepared to organise retailer training on euro security features. Such a proposal for training was presented by the Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania, Vitas Vasiliauskas, to the members of the Board of the Association of Lithuanian Trade Enterprises, who were invited to the Bank of Lithuania to discuss important issues of preparation for euro adoption.

“During the euro adoption period counterfeiters and those who attempt to pay for goods and services with fake money will become more active. Therefore cashiers, before the euro adoption, should be introduced to the new currency and it is worth remembering the security features of the litas as well. We could prepare detailed information on this to distribution businesses, commercial banks, post office representatives, who could then train other people who handle cash”, said Vitas Vasiliauskas.

According to him, retailers could become important partners in informing buyers about the euro. The Bank of Lithuania will offer consumers useful publications on the euro, which could be distributed in trade places.

The meeting also included discussions on the planned primary distribution of euro banknotes and coins to commercial banks and secondary distribution to companies before the introduction of the euro.

V. Vasiliauskas noted that Lithuania has great opportunities to successfully perform the euro adoption requirements and adopt the euro on 1 January 2015, therefore it is important to properly prepare, to create euro adoption preparation plans, and appoint people responsible for their implementation.

It is planned to continue dialogues with business organisations on euro adoption issues.
