In further preparing for the adoption of the common European currency, the shipment of euro banknotes for Lithuania have successfully reached Kaunas. The euro were flown into Kaunas airport from Germany.
From the vaults of the Bank of Lithuania in Kaunas, the euro banknotes will be distributed in Western Lithuania.
In transporting banknotes, strict security procedures and requirements are followed, which ensure that the public will not be informed of the time, route, security and other details of the euro transporting ahead of time. More detailed information on the banknote delivery will be provided when they will all reach the vaults in Lithuania.
The Bank of Lithuania has signed an agreement with the Central Bank of Germany, Bundesbank, regarding the acquisition of euro banknotes in all denominations. In seeking to satisfy the demand for euro banknotes and ensure their necessary stocks during the euro adoption, a total of 132 million euro banknotes will be brought in; their weight is 114 tonnes.
