A cycle of educative lectures for schoolchildren commenced by the Bank of Lithuania aroused great interest among schools. Over nine weeks the Bank of Lithuania has been visited by more than a thousand senior schoolchildren from nearly thirty schools all over Lithuania.

“The schools’ activity beyond the expectations in attending the seminars and lectures delivered by Bank of Lithuania experts shows great hunger for financial and economic knowledge. In the today’s dynamic financial world, financial literacy is a must, therefore the central bank will further explore its potential for educating the society”, Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania Vitas Vasiliauskas said.

Bank of Lithuania experts had prepared a cycle of 12 relevant lectures and seminars on the role of central banks in the economy, financial stability, macroeconomic forecasting, management of foreign reserves, payments, supervision of credit and payment institutions, monetary policy instruments, etc. After the lectures the schoolchildren had a possibility to visit the modern Money Museum of the Bank of Lithuania.

The lecture “The Lithuanian financial system, personal finances and the rudiments of investment” by Bronius Povilaitis, Advisor to the Director of the Economics Department, and the lecture “Money and its security features” by Nijolė Baltrūnienė, Chief Expert of the Currency Examination Division of the Cash Department, have enjoyed great popularity.

Economic enlightenment has been among the Bank of Lithuania’s priorities.  This summer, the Bank, jointly with the Consumer Rights Protection Agency, held a seminar for the senior citizens, arranged an Open Days event for the first time in early October, which gained high popularity; lectures were delivered and seminars were held for schoolchildren several times a week as from mid-October.

The Bank of Lithuania is going to devote more attention to educating consumers in the near future too. The thing is that next year the central bank will take over the supervision of the securities and insurance market participants, will be responsible for dealing with complaints of users of financial services and for the resolution of disputes with financial institutions.
