A 50 litas silver commemorative coin dedicated to the Panemune Castle was issued today.

“This is the sixth coin in the series “Historical and Architectural Monuments of Lithuania”. In total, it is the fiftieth commemorative coin issued by the central bank of the Republic of Lithuania”, said Mr. Reinoldijus Sarkinas, Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania.

The presentation of the new commemorative coin was organised in the Panemune Castle located in the region of Jurbarkas.

The event was attended by local residents, graduates of the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts, which is the owner of the Panemune Castle, the author of the graphic design and plaster model of the coin Mr. Saulius Juozas Jarasius, the author of the booklet dedicated to the new coin Ms. Ruta Janoniene, representatives of UAB Lietuvos monetu kalykla (Lithuanian Mint) that has minted the coin and representatives of the local administration.

“We are happy that the commemorative coin memorialises the best preserved in Lithuania and authentic castle of the 17th century, which is used by the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts for various events dedicated to the preservation of historical and cultural heritage. Many Lithuanian foreign tourists visit the Castle. I hope that the new coin will be attractive to collectors and contribute to the popularisation of the Panemunė Castle”, said professor Dr. Adomas Butrimas, Rector of the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts.

The earlier issued commemorative coins from the series “Historical and Architectural Monuments of Lithuania” included silver coins dedicated to the Trakai Castle, Vilnius Cathedral, Ensemble of Pazaislis Monastery of Camaldolese Monks, Kernave and the Medininkai Castle.

Mr. Reinoldijus Sarkinas mentioned that this series of commemorative coins will be continued: it is planned to issue the coin dedicated to the Kaunas Castle in 2008 and the coin dedicated to the Tytuvenai Architectural Ensemble.

The new coin may be obtained at the cash offices of the Bank of Lithuania in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda. The mintage of the coin is 5,000 pieces.
