At the end of February 2002, international reserves made up LTL 7,254.9 million (USD 1,813.4 million, EUR 2,101.2 million). In the course of one month they increased by LTL 491.7 million, or 7.3 percent.
The main reason behind the increase was the growth of Bank of Lithuania repo transactions with non-residents by LTL 582.3 million. Reserves were also pushed up by the increased value of gold holdings by LTL 11.3 million and net income of the Bank of Lithuania from foreign exchange investment. The growth of international reserves was slowed down by Bank of Lithuania transactions with central government institutions and net sales of foreign exchange to commercial banks of LTL 31.0 million.
