Today, 2 November, experts from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will present at the Bank of Lithuania in Vilnius the latest review of economic developments in Lithuania and other neighbouring countries. The main focus will be on the efficiency of public investment and tax administration.

‘We see reviews prepared by IMF analysts as an impartial glimpse into major economic challenges, which, of course, include issues of the efficiency of public investment and tax administration. Addressing them, which is an unused reserve, can greatly influence the growth of our economy and other economies in the region,’ says Tomas Garbaravičius, Member of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania, who will open the event with an introductory word.

The presentation ‘Effective Government for Stronger Growth’ by Jӧrg Decressin, Deputy Director in the IMF’s European Department, and Emil Stavrev, Deputy Head of the Emerging Economies Division in the IMF’s European Department, notes the particular importance of increasing the efficiency of public investment and tax administration to achieve stronger economic growth. According to the IMF representatives, the economies of much of Central, Eastern and South-eastern Europe have recovered after the crisis, but the trend growth is much lower than before the crisis. The main challenge for the entire region is raising potential growth and accelerating convergence.

Representatives of the Tax Inspectorates of Lithuania and Estonia will submit their comments during the presentation as well.

The IMF arranges such presentations of reviews of economic developments in world country groups to finance experts, the public sector, businesses, the academic community and the media in different countries biannually.
