Bank of Lithuania
2006-10-27

Thirteen Hungarian journalists representing the country’s main press publications, radio, television, news agencies were on a visit in Lithuania on October 26-27. The purpose of the visit organised by the Central Bank of Hungary was to get familiarised with our country’s preparation for the introduction of the euro and the economic situation in Lithuania.

Having reviewed the preparation for the introduction of the euro in a meeting with the guests, Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania Reinoldijus Sarkinas noted that the works performed had great lasting value and would contribute to carrying out the tasks of the euro introduction more rapidly and in a qualitative manner. This will set preconditions for organising a mature and less intensive process of preparation when the decision on the introduction of the euro in Lithuania will be adopted. Reinoldijus Sarkinas pointed out that preparation for the euro introduction would continue.

In reply to a question about a possible date for the introduction of the euro in Lithuania Reinoldijus Sarkinas said: “Having reconsidered our possibilities and in view of the outlook for inflation, we see approximately 2010 as a real date for the introduction of the euro”.

The Hungarian journalists and the representatives of the Central Bank of Hungary were also familiarised with the activities of the Bank of Lithuania and banking supervision in our country.
