On 11 July the European Union's Economic and Financial Affairs Council (Ecofin) adopted a resolution to introduce the euro in Slovenia on 1 January 2007.

„I wish success to the colleagues from the central bank of Slovenia as well as other institutions of that country during the euro introduction process and hope that this process will end in success,“ Reinoldijus Sarkinas, the governor of the Bank of Lithuania said in his comment on the news from Brussels.

At the present time the euro area consists of twelve EU member states which have already adopted a single currency, the euro. They are Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Greece, Spain, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, France, Finland and Germany.

During the accession to the EU our country undertook the obligation to shift to the European single currency (euro). At the present time, Lithuania as well as other new EU member countries is subject to a derogation to use its national currency.

The institutions of Lithuania have decided to perform a comprehensive economic data analysis and prepare a forecast of macroeconomic indicators the subsequent assessment of which will help to set the euro introduction date.
