Balance Sheet of Monetary Financial Institutions, May 2020

Today, the Bank of Lithuania published the MFI balance sheet for May 2020, which shows that:

Deposits of Lithuanian residents with credit institutions rose1 by €599.9 million over the month, while over the last 12 months – by €4.3 billion (to €26.8 billion at the end the month). Over the month, non-financial corporation, general government and household2 deposits increased by €232.6 million, €225.2 million and €158.0 million respectively, while financial sector3 deposits reduced by €15.8 million. Deposits from these sectors amounted to €7.2 billion, €3.0 billion, €15.8 billion and €736.1 million respectively (see Chart 1);

overnight deposits from Lithuanian households and non-financial corporations with credit institutions increased by €252.3 million and €185.1 million respectively over the month, to €7.0 billion and €12.0 billion respectively;

loans granted by credit institutions to Lithuanian residents decreased by €213.3 million over the month, while over the last three months – by €419.2 million (to €20.0 billion at the end of the month).  Loans to Lithuanian non-financial corporations, financial sector and general government fell by €255.0 million, €16.7 million and €2.4 million respectively, while loans to households increased by €60.8 million. At the end of the month, loans to these sectors amounted to €8.0 billion, €1.1 billion, €339.6 million and €10.6 billion respectively (see Chart 2);

loans for house purchase granted by credit institutions to Lithuanian households increased by €75.8 million, while loans for consumption and other purposes decreased by €6.2 million and €8.7 million respectively – to €8.7 billion, €741.7 million and €1.2 billion (see Chart 3).

1 Unless otherwise specified, monthly changes in euro are presented as transactions, i.e. they are calculated by taking the difference between end-of-month outstanding amounts and then removing the effects of revaluation adjustments, exchange rate adjustments, loan write-offs and reclassifications.
