To focus more attention on financial stability issues and implement more appropriately the new tasks in the field of statistics in the run up to the euro, the Monetary Policy Department of the Bank of Lithuania has been reorganised into the Economics Department and Statistics Department.

These changes have become effective as from Monday, 21 March. The departments of Economics and Statistics have been formed from the staff of the former Monetary Policy Department.

Former Monetary Policy Department Director Raimondas Kuodis has been appointed Director of Economics Department.

Mr Rimantas Juozas Vaicenavicius, who has recently worked as Deputy Director General of the Customs Department under the Ministry of Finance, has been appointed Director of Statistics Department.

In addition to the Monetary Policy Instruments Division and the Macroeconomics and Forecasting Division, the Economics Department will also include a new Financial Stability Division, whose main responsibility will be analysing the Lithuanian financial system with a special focus on its ability to function in the conditions of economic and financial shocks.

The Statistics Department will contain the divisions of Money and Banking Statistics, General Statistics, and Balance of Payments and Foreign Reserve Statistics.

Mr Raimondas Kuodis has worked at the Bank of Lithuania since 1996. He is a doctor of social sciences. Mr Kuodis graduated in economic cybernetics (Vilnius University) and international relations and political studies (Institute of International Relations and Political Science, Vilnius University).

Mr Rimantas Juozas Vaicenavicius read mathematics at Vilnius University. He has a PhD in mathematics. He has previously held positions at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and at the Ministry of Finance where he served as Director of the Fiscal Policy Department. From 2002 he served as Deputy Director General of the Customs Department.
