At the end of March 2004 broad money M2 made up LTL 17.9 billion. In the course of one month it increased by LTL 522.4 million, i.e. by 3.0 per cent.
Currency in circulation contracted by LTL 39.7 million (0.7%). Demand deposits increased by LTL 40.6 million (0.7%), of which deposits of non-financial undertakings and natural persons went up by LTL 32.0 million and LTL 7.4 million, respectively.
Litas time and savings deposits increased by LTL 200.1 million (5.3%). Such deposits of non-financial undertakings went up by LTL 116.4 million and natural persons by LTL 97.8 million. Deposits in foreign currencies increased by LTL 321.5 million (9.6%), of which deposits of non-financial undertakings and natural persons went up by respectively LTL 215.1 million and LTL 88.1 million.
Net foreign assets increased in March by LTL 1.0 billion (16.3%), of which foreign assets went up by LTL 646.0 million (5.3%), and foreign liabilities went down by LTL 355.3 million (5.8%).
Domestic credit decreased by LTL 443.0 million (3.2%), of which net claims on the central government and mandatory social and health insurance funds declined by LTL 762.4 million (4.7 times). Claims on the private sector and non-banking financial institutions increased by LTL 295.9 million and LTL 58.8 million (2.4% and 4.2%), respectively.
The main reason for the increase of net foreign assets and the decline of net claims on the central government and mandatory social and health insurance funds was the transfer of part of the funds from the EUR 600 million ten-year Eurobond placement in international markets into central government accounts at the Bank of Lithuania.
