At the end of January 2006 broad money M2 made up LTL 28.5 billion. In the course of one month it decreased by LTL 428.0 million, i.e. 1.5 per cent.
Money M1 declined in one month by LTL 860.5 million (5.1%) to LTL 15.9 billion at the end of the month. With respect to M1 components, currency in circulation decreased by LTL 215.2 million, while demand deposits in litas went down by LTL 645.3 million. Demand deposits of natural persons decreased over the month by LTL 446.7 million, non-financial undertakings by LTL 406.5 million and other institutions by LTL 207.8 million.
Quasi-money grew by LTL 432.5 million in January to LTL 12.6 billion at the end of the month. Litas time and savings deposits increased by LTL 358.6 million in one month, of which time and savings deposits of natural persons increased by LTL 253.0 million, and such deposits of non-financial undertakings and other institutions by LTL 81.2 million and LTL 24.4 million, respectively. Deposits in foreign currencies went up by LTL 73.9 million, of which deposits of natural persons increased by LTL 136.7 million and deposits of non-financial undertakings declined by LTL 62.6 million.
The main M2 counterparts - net foreign assets and domestic credit - developed in opposite directions. Net foreign assets decreased by LTL 573.7 million (14.4%) and domestic credit grew by LTL 341.7 million (1.1%). Net claims on the central government and social insurance funds decreased in January by LTL 475.6 million, while claims on non-banking financial institutions rose by LTL 74.4 million. Claims on the private sector increased by LTL 782.7 million, among which claims on private non-financial undertakings and natural persons went up most, by LTL 361.2 million and LTL 420.4 million, respectively.
