Today, Lietuvos bankas published the balance of payments for May 2026, which shows that:

the current account balance (CAB) turned from a surplus (€96.2 million) in April to a deficit in May, at €267.8 million. This development was mainly driven by a significant increase in the foreign trade deficit (see Chart 1). As exports of goods decreased more sharply than imports (by 14.2% and 5.7% respectively), the foreign trade deficit widened substantially (by 45.8%) to €859.5 million. Due to an increase in imports of services (by 5.4%) and a slight increase in exports of services (by 0.4%), the surplus on the services balance decreased (by 5.3%) to €979.2 million. The deficit on the primary income balance increased (by 1.4%) to €424.6 million. The surplus on the secondary income balance decreased from €70.5 million to €37.1 million;

the negative net flow of financial account investment (€627.3 million) was mainly determined by the negative net flow of portfolio investment (€954.4 million), resulting from the Government’s eurobond issue (see Chart 2).
