Babies born on the historical day of the adoption of Europe’s single currency, 1 January 2015, will be presented with the first Lithuanian euro coins from the symbolical first batch of Lithuanian euro coins minted in Vilnius.

The first one thousand of one euro denomination coins with the Vytis were minted on 16 June 2014, when the Lithuanian Mint started official mass coinage of 2015 circulation euros. Immediately after having been minted, the first coins were put in a special box and handed over to the Money Museum of the Bank of Lithuania for storage. It is namely from this first thousand coins that Lietuvos bankas will allocate as many coins as there will be babies born on the first night of the next year.

The coin each baby will receive is placed inside organic glass, which is decorated with the engraved inscription “The first Lithuanian euro — for you!” These souvenirs have been designed in Lithuania, while the whole gift has been moulded in Germany.  Footage has perpetuated the keepsake’s entire birth road — from the minting of the coin to the last moments of its engraving. Together with these unique coins, babies will be presented with nominal certificates.

Maternity hospitals in Lithuania are invited to inform about the initiative of Lietuvos bankas and cooperate in presenting the babies with these gifts. Those parents whose babies will be born on 1 January and who will agree to join this initiative will receive invitations to the celebratory award event. Lietuvos bankas is going to organise it on the occasion of 100 days of the euro adoption in the spring of the next year.

Parents who will not be able to arrive to the celebration will receive their gifts by post.
