After the adoption of the euro, litas will be exchanged into the new currency at 330 post office branches
The Board of the Bank of Lithuania has approved the list of the Lithuania Post branches that will be exchanging litas into euro for 60 calendar days from the euro adoption day. It includes 330 post office branches across Lithuania.
Following the euro adoption on 1 January 2015, the Lithuania Post branches listed will, until 1 March 2015, exchange litas into euro. After this term expires, the Lithuania Post will be able to exchange litas into euro according to its own established procedure.
Litas will not be exchanged into euro either at home or on the streets. Therefore, the public is advised to be alert and not be deceived if persons visiting at their home would offer to record their litas banknotes, exchange their savings into euro, etc. Officially and legally the currency will only be exchanged at the Bank of Lithuania, commercial bank branches, Lithuania Post branches and some credit unions.
The Bank of Lithuania will, at its cash offices in Vilnius and Kaunas, exchange litas into euro free of charge for unlimited time.
Commercial banks will be exchanging litas into euro free of charge for 6 months from the euro adoption day, i.e. until 30 June 2015. For another half-year, until 31 December 2015, litas will be exchanged into euro free of charge at the commercial bank branches (in all county centres and some other towns) included into the Bank of Lithuania’s list. The list will be published after the Council of the European Union takes a decision on the date of the euro adoption in Lithuania. The decision is expected to be taken in the summer of this year.
Litas will also be exchanged into euro free of charge for 60 calendar days from the euro adoption date, i.e. until 1 March 2015, at some credit unions; their list is yet to be approved.
Lithuania expects to successfully meet the requirements for the euro adoption, the so-called Maastricht criteria, and on 1 January 2015 should adopt the single currency of the EU.
