Lithuania’s pension system has been facing significant demographic challenges: an upswing in emigration, on the one hand, and a decline in birth rates and population aging, on the other. Projections from state and international institutions are merciless – the number of people working in the country will fall significantly over the next two decades. This means that the ratio of Lithuania’s working-age population to the retirement-age population will change considerably. Therefore, the domestic pension system will be faced with a twofold challenge – ensuring an adequate income for the retirees and remaining financially sustainable in the future.

By organising this conference, the Bank of Lithuania seeks to gather policy makers and academics to discuss good practices with regard to the most sustainable pension systems.
