Lithuania’s accession to NATO and the European Union 20 years ago was a historic and decisive step in the country’s quest for security and integration into the European community. Upon meeting all of the necessary conditions and criteria for membership, on 29 March 2004, Lithuania officially became a member of NATO. This ensured not only military security, but also the trust of foreign investors, who saw this step as a guarantee of stability and security.
The 20 years since Lithuania’s accession to the European Union on 1 May 2004 are a testament to the country’s determination to become an integral part of the European family. EU membership has opened up new opportunities for economic growth, the development of education, and social well-being, allowing Lithuanians to move, study and work freely across the EU. Moreover, EU membership allows Lithuania to be part of the overall decision-making process that shapes the policy and strategy of the EU.
