New technological developments prompt changes related to payment instruments – they become faster, more convenient and easier to use. In Lithuania, contactless payment cards were introduced in 2016. Such cards do not have to be inserted into a POS terminal: hold them against a terminal with a Contactless Symbol and wait for a beep indicating a successful payment. For low-value purchases, PIN code might not be required.
More information on contactless payment cards, contactless POS terminals, and security features is available in an ECB brochure
