Special logotype of the Bank of Lithuania will remind of important dates of the national history of money

This year, the Bank of Lithuania publications, website, new exhibitions of the Money Museum will be marked by the anniversary sign of the Bank of Lithuania created by the students of the Vilnius Academy of Arts. It will remind of two important dates of the national history of money, marking the creation and revival of the currency system of independent Lithuania.

Ninety years ago, on 2 October 1922, the national currency litas was issued into circulation for the first time, whereas on 1 October 1992 the national curency system of Lithuania, which regained its independence, was created and the issue of temporary currency units talonas was started.

Special logotype dedicated to these occasions was created in cooperation with the students of the Vilnius Academy of Arts supervised by experienced lecturers of the Department of Graphic Design. The anniversary sign was selected from around 500 alternatives offered by thirteen students.

Mr. Vitas Vasiliauskas, Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania, expressed his gratitude today for the remarkable work to the representatives of the Vilnius Academy of Arts, who visited the Money Museum of the Bank of Lithuania and got acquainted with its rich and playful exposition.

“I hope that the creation of the anniversary logotype was for you not only an interesting creative task, but also an occasion to find out more about the central bank of the Republic of Lithuania and its history”, said Mr. Vasiliauskas to the representatives of the Vilnius Academy of Arts.

He encouraged young graphic artists to continue the cooperation.

“Each year, the Bank of Lithuania issues several collector litas coins. Tenders for their design are announced – I invite the young talents in graphic arts to offer their ideas and to participate in the creation of money”, told Mr. Vitas Vasiliauskas.

A numismatic coinset of the Republic of Lithuania circulation coins of 2012 with a commemorative sign dedicated to Lithuania’s national currency system’s 20th anniversary was issued in January. Images of talonas banknotes were used for the illustrations of the coin case, whereas an undersized 1 talonas unit was included in the commemorative sign. Talonas, as legal tender, was used for a short while – until the Lithuanian currency under the historical name of litas was issued on 25 June 1993. The numismatic coinset can be obtained at the cash offices of the Bank of Lithuania in Vilnius (2 Totorių St), Kaunas (25 Maironio St) and Klaipėda (16 Naujoji uosto St).
