Money in Lithuania 19141945 /

The virtual exposition Money in Lithuania in 19141945 is dedicated to all those interested in development of banking and money in Lithuania. It consists of the 3 main parts: Visual Narration, Banknote and Coin Illustrations, and Catalogue. Visual Narration is divited into 5 thematic sections with subsections. The story narrated and the visual material presented there highlights the political, economic and financial situation in Lithuania from the begining of World War One and the restoration of the state to the Soviet occupation and the end of World War Two, presents the countrys central bank of emission, the circumstances of its establishment and liquidation, and the monetary policy conducted by it. Banknote and Coin Illustrations present heraldic signs and other artistic elements used most often by the designers in the money creation process; Catalogue, divided into 5 thematic sections with subsections, introduces the diversity of the national and other currencies that circulated in the country in the period state above. |

True Litas Printing History. The Litas history is described in two parts of the book. The first part, encompassing the period from 1989 to 1994, reminds us how well-known Lithuanian artists designed banknotes, presents discussions of historians about the banknote conception, the role of the KGB in creating the Litas, disputes between the Bank of Lithuania and the Government, why the first Litas issue was of a bad quality and how they were reprinted. The second part, covering 1994-2004, describes the events, when after the Bank of Lithuanias refusal to accept the issue, a new banknote issue was entrusted to an American company which brought an action against the Bank of Lithuania to an international arbitrage and how within the arbitrage process the USA corporation turned to a defendant instead of being a prosecutor, and finally was to pay a compensation. |

In the publication the history of banks that operated in the late 19th first half of the 20th century is described based on sources and surviving iconographical materials projects, photographs and postcards. The subject under review is divided into two periods: banks before the restoration of statehood in Lithuania in 1918 and 1918-1940. The circumstances of the establishment of banks and other credit institutions, their activities, location, the history of the rent and construction of the buildings are briefly reviewed. The major focus is on the history of the establishment of credit institutions in the three largest cities of Lithuania: Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda. The publication contains over 250 pictures of banks from the archives, museums and libraries of Lithuania as well as from private collectors sets, many of which are published for the first time. |

The catalogue Money in Photography includes creative
works by art photographers of Lithuania exhibited in an exhibition under the
same title dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Bank of Lithuania.
45 authors from various areas of the country presented 164 artistically
meaningful photographs of various genres created using miscellaneous techniques
and methods. Money is used in photographs as the main creative subject, a means
of artistic expression to communicate ones ideas and to demonstrate the point
of view of various layers of society or individuals on the importance of money
and its place in life. Most works presented in the catalogue are published for
the first time |

in Lithuania. Shares and Bonds. 1872-1940 / the

The publication presents securities - shares and bills
(loan bills, bonds, bons, promise and mortgage bills)
and other related documents of title. The chronology
of the events described in the book starts with the
year 1872 when the first joint-stock company in Vilnius
- the Land Bank- was founded and ends with 1940, the
year when the USSR occupied Lithuania and nationalised
all its credit institutions, industrial, trade and
other type of enterprises. The publication contains
securities demonstrated at the exhibition also called
Securities in Lithuania. Shares and Bonds. 1872-1940
held in the Bank of Lithuania. Securities are grouped
by type and presented in a chronological order by
period: the most ancient securities issued in the
period from the end of the 19th century till the restoration
of the statehood of Lithuania in 1918; loan bills
issued by the state and municipalities; securities
of joint-stock banks and other credit institutions;
joint-stock companies securities issued in the Republic
of Lithuania in 1918-1940. Securities issued in 1920-1939
in the Vilnius region occupied by Poland, and securities
of the companies of the Lithuanian capital established
in the USA are also included into the publication.
The period ending with 1918 is represented by documents
of title and city loan bonds issued only by joint-stock
companies founded in Lithuania or those that had their
branches therein.
When presenting a particular period securities, the
publication gives a short political, economic and
financial overview of that span, circumstances under
which a loan was made, a joint-stock bank or other
joint-stock companies established, their founders,
the amount of share capital, securities denominations,
number and ways of their distribution. These data
were basically grounded on laws of the Republic of
Lithuania, Government resolutions, orders of the Minister
of Finance, semi-annual and annual balance sheet data
of joint-stock companies and other documents.
The book presents about two hundred securities from
the collection of the Bank of Lithuania Museum, the
Lithuanian National Museum, the National Museum of
M.K. Čiurlionis, the History Museum of Lithuania Minor,
the History Museum of Trakai , the Aušra Museum
of Šiauliai, as well as private collections of Aleksandras
Kubilas and Virgilijus Poviliūnas. |

in Caricatures: an exhibition catalogue and the
Bank of Lithuania Museum publication issued by the

The catalogue presents caricatures whose main subject
is money and satirical graphic art works which were
demonstrated in the Bank of Lithuania exhibition also

The Bank of Lithuania history and money history Lithuania-wide
review has been grounded on the Museum exposition.
It gives a short survey of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania
money from the first mint coins that appeared in circulation
at the end of the 14th and its development throughout
the years till the 18th century. The history of the
Republic of Lithuania money production in the period
1918-1940, the Bank of Lithuania role in strengthening
the national monetary system after the restoration
of independence in 1990, and the activities of the
Lithuanian Mint are described therein. |
