The exhibition: “Money In Photographs”

The exhibition dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Bank of Lithuania and the litas presents creative works by 45 art photographers of Lithuania where money became the essential creative subject.

The exhibition was organised by the Museum of the Bank of Lithuania together with the Union of Lithuanian Art Photographers. By inviting photographers to participate in the exhibition concerning a particular subject we proposed using various genres, techniques and methods of art photography, choosing a subject where money, banks or events and phenomena related to them are treated freely by employing keen wits of artists and revealing even the strangest destinations of money. Mosaic of artistically meaningful photographs and their series revealed the distinctive viewpoint of artists on money and its role in society. The creative works are characteristic of original compositions and unexpected decisions, distinctive way and manner of portrayal. By viewing the modern world that surrounds them with sensitive eyes of an artist and searching for new forms of expression, they noticed even the slightest, but important details or fragments that exactly characterise the place and meaning of the subject itself, complex proprietary relations within the modern society, and revealed a subjective, uniquely understood, but original point of view on the subject and the items that surround it. The main subject of photographs is not necessarily exposed, viewable, but easily sensed. The photographs reveal trade transactions of common people in town and country markets, marketplaces and auctions; other views or events of everyday life soften the coldness and rationality inherent in the name of the subject. Expressive characters seen in the photographs as though reveal the depths of their soul; series of images create a mosaic that reflects the peculiarities of the national character. Complex social and economic phenomena in society related to money or determined by it are also noticed. Colourful compositions characteristic of variety of forms create a mystical and unreal feeling. Most works where money covers the main part of the subject are full of concealed irony and humour.
