Front.On the right-hand side the note bears a portrait of prelate Maironis (Jonas Maciulis, 1862-1932), distinguished Lithuanian poet, and the inscription of his name Maironis. The top ornamental band has a denomination numeral 20 on the left and the inscription LIETUVOS BANKAS (Bank of Lithuania) in the centre. There are two numerals 20 on the left and on the right sides of the bottom ornamental band with the inscription DVIDESIMT LITU (Twenty Litas) positioned between them. A year of issue 1997, green contoured numeral 20, inscription LIETUVOS BANKO VALDYBOS PIRMININKAS (Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania) and his signature are placed to the left off the portrait. The front of the banknote contains reddish, bluish, brown and green colours.

Back.The back of the note shows the building of Kaunas War Museum with a belfry , statue of Liberty, coat of arms of the Republic of Lithuania, denomination numeral 20 repeated three times and inscription DVIDESIMT LITU (Twenty Litas). The back of the banknote contains brown, greenish and grey colours.

Size of the note: 135mmx65 mm. The designers of the banknote are Justas Tolvaisis and Giedrius Jonaitis.

Security features of the banknote:

1. Paper of white colour, non-fluorescent under ultraviolet light.
2. Watermark - the portrait of Maironis.
3. Security thread with the repeated microtext LIETUVOS BANKAS 20 LTL.
4. Visible fibres of red, blue and green colour. The green and red fibres fluoresce under ultraviolet light.
5. Raised intaglio printing of the portrait, ornamental bands, denomination numerals and inscriptions on the front of the note provides a tactile surface easily distinguished by touch.
6. A repeated microtext LIETUVOS BANKAS (Bank of Lithuania) is printed in the line above the bottom ornamental band. The background of the denomination numeral on the left-hand side of the ornamental band contains the microtext 20LB which can be read through a magnifying glass.
7. Recognition sign for the blind - two vertically placed raised isosceles triangles.
8. See through feature front to back in perfect register.
9. Latent image (denomination numeral 20) in the right-hand side of the bottom ornamental band, to the left of the numeral 20.
10. Elements, intended for the anti-colour copier protection: multi-coloured top and bottom edges, background of the portrait, security line structure, specific fine line patterns.
11. Vertical serial number fluoresces in light green colour under ultraviolet light.
12. Rectangle with the denomination numeral printed in invisible inks to the left off the portrait fluoresces in light green colour under ultraviolet light.
13. The green contour of the numeral 20 in the centre on the front of the note fluoresces in light green colour under ultraviolet light.
14. Contours of the flowers and leaves printed in the centre of the top and bottom edges of the note fluoresce light green under ultraviolet light.
