The Bank of Lithuania has the exclusive right to issue currency. The Bank issues and withdraws the currency of the Republic of Lithuania from circulation, establishes currency denominations, distinguishing, security and acceptability features, replaces unsuitable currency units, organises the production, transportation and safekeeping of currency, establishes the arrangements for the withdrawal, replacement and destruction of worn out and unsuitable currency units, forms banknote and coin reserves and performs expert examination of litas banknotes, litas and centas coins.
