Balance of Payments of the Republic of Lithuania for Q3 and the first three quarters of 2016

December 21, 2016

The surpluses on the balances of services and secondary income in Q3 2016 did not offset the deficits on the foreign trade and primary income balance, which led to the build-up of a current account deficit of EUR 26.6 million. The positive EUR 463.4 million financial account balance in Q3 2016 was due to requirements to non-residents increasing more than liabilities.

At the end of Q3 2016, the negative international investment position balance (EUR 17.5 billion) showed that Lithuania is a debtor vis-a-vis the rest of the world. In this period, the gross debt amounted to EUR 32.4 billion, or 84.9 per cent of GDP, while the net debt – EUR 10.9 billion, or 28.7 per cent of GDP.

These new data were released today by the Statistics Department of the Economics and Financial Stability Service at the Bank of Lithuania.

More information on the country’s balance of payments for October 2016 is available in the statistical release of the Bank of Lithuania. Comprehensive balance of payments data are also published on the Bank of Lithuania’s website.
